From a farm size kitchen to its 5 inviting porches, White Pines Victorian Lodge tastefully combines the house's rustic historic past with its northern Wisconsin present, which is exactly the reason for there actually being a specific category of Victorian house called Door County Victorian...built with handmade spike nails set into massive joists, beams and studs designed to withstand the wild weather that was so tough on the area's early settlers.
Built in 1870, this is the oldest house in Sturgeon Bay's residential historic district, just a 3 minute walk to the downtown historic district which has been a member of the state's Main Street program and is an unusual jewel these days -- a small town downtown with useful, thriving businesses in every quaint 1800s building -- and a glistening waterfront.  Easy walking distance to schools, shopping, dining, and the bay.  And just 45 minutes from Green Bay's Austin Straubel Airport; about 2 hours north of Milwaukee.
The house was completely hand-built by August Larson whose craftsmanship can be identified in several nearby houses. The stone foundation is thick and solid.  This house sits on the very last parcel of the original land tract on which most of  Sturgeon Bay was built, on a corner lot with sidewalk only in front, inviting tree-lined streets throughout the area, and is set back over 100 feet from the road in a truly park-like setting.  There are many gardens, along with lilacs, bridal wreath and other flowering, mature bushes.  Towering white and red pines whisper on windy days, making a soothing lake shore sound.  On pleasant evenings, a horse and carriage passes by, just as it would have over a century ago.  As beautiful as Door County is, there is so much to see, do, and enjoy here in Sturgeon Bay that many of our guests spend their entire visit right here.  And what a great advantage that is with gas prices as they are!

  • a great reputation!

White Pines has been in operation for 7 1/2 years, open year round. It is with great pride that we have always operated green and that this was the first green business in Door County to be officially certified by Travel Green Wisconsin -- and continues to be the area's only green, chemical-free lodging.  It was a struggle at first, nobody comprehending what "green" even meant...but now this type of unique lodging is in constantly growing demand.  Certification and listings on green websites would cease if the B&B is purchased by anyone not wishing to continue its green practices. Though that choice can be made by a new owner, we certainly hope what we have done here would continue...for the sake of guests and our Earth.

Just as six years of restoration work were coming to an end, illness intervened.  Owner/innkeeper Sheri Gibbs wishes she could keep the house and business, but no longer has the physical strength required, and with regret must pass her cherished home on to someone new.  She will fondly remember the hundreds of wonderful people who have stayed at White Pines Victorian Lodge and all the hugs from departing guests!
